Description

The VP, Tax is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the global tax strategy, compliance, and governance for the company. This role requires an in-depth understanding of corporate tax laws, tax planning, and risk management to ensure the company’s tax obligations are met efficiently and effectively. The VP, Tax will manage all tax activities for the organization, including management of staff and external consultants, and collaborate cross-functionally with legal, finance, and operations teams to support business objectives while managing tax risks and opportunities.

VP, Global Tax Strategy & Operations

Key Responsibilities

Tax Strategy & Planning

  • Develops and executes a global tax strategy aligned with the company’s overall business goals and objectives.
  • Leads the identification and implementation of tax-efficient structures, strategies, and policies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize tax benefits.
  • Provides guidance on tax implications related to mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings, and joint ventures.
  • Stays current with emerging tax trends, changes in legislation, and evolving business practices, and advise the executive leadership team on strategic implications.

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Oversees the global tax compliance process to ensure accurate and timely filing of all tax returns (corporate, international, state, and local taxes) in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Leads the preparation and review of the company’s annual tax provision, ensuring compliance with ASC 740 (FAS 109) and other relevant accounting standards.
  • Manages audits and inquiries from tax authorities, working with external advisors and legal counsel to resolve issues and ensure favorable outcomes.

Tax Risk Management

  • Identifies and assesses tax risks and develop strategies to mitigate exposure to tax penalties and disputes.
  • Manages tax audits and disputes with tax authorities, coordinating with external advisors and ensuring proper documentation and defense.
  • Develops internal controls and processes to monitor compliance and reduce the risk of errors or fraud in tax reporting.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Fosters a collaborative and transparent culture within the broader finance and legal teams.
  • Manages external tax advisors and consultants, ensuring effective partnership and cost control.
  • Supports the planning for the department including headcount, budgeting, training, and systems requirements.
  • Participates in the selection, development, performance appraisal, merit recommendation, and promotion of staff.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partners with key internal stakeholders, including legal, finance, accounting, treasury, and operations, to provide tax insights and guidance on various business initiatives.
  • Works closely with senior leadership to ensure that tax considerations are integrated into financial reporting, corporate governance, and strategic decision-making.

Global Tax Management

  • Oversees tax compliance and planning for the company’s global operations, ensuring adherence to local tax laws and regulations across jurisdictions.
  • Monitors and manages transfer pricing policies, tax treaties, and intercompany transactions to optimize the company’s global tax position.
  • Leads tax planning and compliance for international subsidiaries and joint ventures.

Qualification & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and applicable job experience.
  • Advanced degree in Taxation, Law, or Finance, preferred.
  • P.A. or equivalent designation, preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in tax, with at least 5-7 years in a leadership position.
  • Extensive experience in managing complex tax structures, tax compliance, tax planning, and risk management at a global level.
  • Experience working in multinational environments and handling cross-border tax issues.
  • Deep technical knowledge of tax law, corporate tax structures, transfer pricing, and tax compliance requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. tax laws, international tax regulations, and corporate tax accounting principles (ASC 740).
  • Strong strategic thinking and the ability to balance tax efficiency with business operations.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with senior executives.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and the ability to translate complex tax issues into clear and actionable insights.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines.

Benefits

The starting base pay range for this position is $270,000 – $300,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus, equity, and a robust benefits package.
