Description

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Senior Vice President ot US Tax to lead tax support for all of our activities in North America. The SVP of US Tax is responsible for staff development of the US tax team. This individual also acts as a director on the board of various Balfour Beatty US holding companies. Balfour Beatty operates within three distinct divisions in the US (with some activities provided on a shared service basis across the three), and the SVP of US Tax works closely with the US-based leadership of all three divisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver tax support to our US businesses, ensuring we comply with our legal obligations related to tax, while generating and implementing opportunities to maximize tax credits and reliefs and minimize tax expense within the tax strategy set by Balfour Beatty plc.
  • Provide tax support to new business activities in each of our three US businesses. This includes growing our business into new geographies within the US, working with new JV partners, bidding on new project opportunities and overseeing M&A activities for our US Investments business in particular.
  • Offer tax support for the disposal of JV investments and businesses within the US, working with JV partners, staff of US businesses and outside tax advisors.
  • Preparation and submission of all federal and state tax returns, extensions and payments. Balfour Beatty currently files approximately 300 income tax returns in US states and cities and is the tax representative for 77 partnership returns. In addition, compliance includes extensions and quarterly tax filings.
  • Preparation of current and deferred tax accounting for inclusion in both the Balfour Beatty worldwide consolidated accounts (IFRS) and consolidated and stand-alone accounts for various US entities (US GAAP and IFRS).
  • Preparation and submission of all indirect tax returns including sales and use tax, property tax, franchise tax returns and business license returns.
  • Management of all tax audits in the US and Canada.
  • Conducts tax risk assurance reviews for indirect and payroll tax purposes.
  • Management of the US tax risk register.
  • Oversees the management of Canadian tax compliance activities (undertaken by external advisers) covering our legacy Canadian entities.
  • Provision of tax support to US HR teams to ensure compliance with tax reporting and withholding obligations related to staff payments and benefits.
  • Maintenance of US and Canadian legal entities’ organizational chart.

Promote Customer Relations

  • Builds effective relationships with project teams, functional departments, customers, vendors and user groups that reflect and support company core values while meeting or exceeding the customers’ expectations.
  • Actively participates in industry, client, and community relations to enhance company image.

Qualification & Requirements

  • Experience leading the tax function of a large, diverse organization; dealing with recruitment, staff development and performance issues.
  • Knowledge of IFRS and US GAAP tax accounting and US tax (federal and state).
  • Experience delivering tax support to business projects, often involving senior leaders as well as finance and legal colleagues.
  • Ability to work in a matrix organization with line management in another country (UK) but key internal customers and colleagues in the US.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax issues to non-tax colleagues.
  • Ability to be flexible and creative in providing solutions to problems while being firm and clear when there are lines that can’t be crossed.
  • Relevant academic and professional qualifications (at least 10 years of experience including senior in-house tax experience).
  • Willingness to travel (mainly within the US). Balfour Beatty’s US business is spread nationwide, and the SVP of US Tax is required to travel to meet with colleagues in a variety of locations.
