Description
The Chief Financial Officer of the Sisters of Providence Mother Joseph Administrative Center, in collaboration with the Congregational Treasurer and Congregational Director of Finance and Administration, is responsible for developing and implementing financial strategies and processes to support assigned local communities and sisters, consistent with the strategic goals, mission and values of the Sisters of Providence Congregation of which it is a part.
Key Responsibilities
- A member of the Senior Management Team of the Administrative Center, which also includes the Director and the Operations Officer. This group works together and with other parties to manage the day-to-day activities of the Administrative Center to fulfill its responsibilities to the Congregation.
- Responsible for the overall financial administration of the Administrative Center, including finance team goals and plans.
- Develop and recommend financial policies and procedures for the Administrative Center.
- Serve as a member of the investment committee
- Participate in Congregational Leadership Conferences when requested; Administrative Center Leadership Team meetings; Congregation Finance Service meetings, and all staff Administrative Center meetings to share information and coordinate activities.
- When requested, attend the Sisters of Providence Mother Joseph civil Corporation board of Directors meetings, and assists in the preparation of agendas and meeting materials.
- In collaboration with the Administrative Center Director, recommend changes to Corporation bylaws; recommend candidates for Board of Director, officers and committee positions for local Corporations and local investment committees; be one of the authorized signers for various banking and investment activities; issue credit cards for the Administrative Center Senior Managers and, with approval of local leader, the sisters with credit limits based on Congregation guidelines; prepare and recommend approval of the consolidated budget for the Administrative Center;
- recommend to Core Group (CC + 2 Local Leaders) approval of unbudgeted expenses and capital items above the financial competency (currently $100,000 per item), purchases or sales of property, debt, leases or other multi-year commitments; monitor financial performance of the Administrative Center; recommend approval of annual financial statements for the Administrative Center; arrange for sisters’ medical coverage; and monitor and recommend action related to legal issues and settlements after consulting with and receiving recommendations from lawyers.
- Manage investments, including proposing updates to local investment policies and procedures to ensure consistency with congregational guidelines and to meet local needs.
- Arrange for insurance coverage for the Administrative Center and assigned sisters (property, casualty, liability, etc.).
- Provide or arrange for financial services for religious congregations that are supported by the Sisters of Providence through covenant relationships.
- Provide oversight of approved contractual arrangements related to the Administrative Center or related entities.
- Provide input and represent the finance team in matters related to office management, including office space, staff meetings and retreats, staff surveys, office-wide celebrations, policy development, IT and HR issues, needs for administrative support, and the like.
- Provide input regarding the appointment of local auditors for the Administrative Center and related civil Corporations and coordinate all audit-related matters.
- Provide recommendations on new or revised covenant relationships with other Communities that impact the Administrative Center and the Congregation.
- Approve cash disbursements (including payroll) within budget and the financial competency level.
- Lead the preparation of the consolidated budget for the Administrative Center and related activities, including the personal budgets of the sisters and local communities.
- Manage the process for reviewing, approving, and making donations within the approved budget in collaboration with a committee that includes sisters chosen from local communities.
- Manage the administration of sisters’ Wills and Patrimony, per guidelines.
- Prepare and present an annual report to the sisters, local leaders, Congregational Councilor, and the Congregational Treasurer summarizing the financial status of the Administrative Center and associated ministries.
- Submit information for the five-year actuarial study of the Congregation to the Congregational Administrative and Finance Office by the required due dates.
- Review and approve monthly financial statements for the Administrative Center and related Corporations by the end of the subsequent month and submit to the Congregational Administrative and Finance Office per reporting guidelines.
- Prepare and submit required filings to government bodies per local laws and requirements.
- Coordinate the financial aspects of the purchase and sale of property.
- Assist in the preparation and approval process for Acts of Council related to the Administrative Center or its activities.
- Monitor use of cemeteries for sisters assigned to the Administrative Center and arrange space as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director – Sisters of Providence Mother Joseph Administrative Center.
Qualification & Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field; or equivalent educ/experience
- Master’s Degree in Business Administration or a related field; or equivalent educ/experience (preferred)
- Upon hire: CPA license
- 10 or more years of Financial management experience in a small or medium size office environment providing multiple services to a defined group
- 5 years of CPA Certification experience; Providing services to a religious congregation in a local area that is part of a larger central organization; Fluency in French or Spanish that are the primary languages of the other Administrative Centers within the Congregation (preferred)
- Ability to communicate in English effectively both verbally and in writing, and willingness to learn progressively either French or Spanish in order to facilitation with the others Administrative Centers.
- Ability to follow appropriate communications channels

- Proficiency with MS Office products including Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point.
