The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking a visionary and strategic leader to serve as the next Executive Director of Engineering IT Shared Services. This cabinet-level role also functions as the College’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), overseeing a dynamic team of 75+ IT professionals and shaping the future of technology services that empower world-class research, teaching, and innovation for a nationally ranked college comprised of over 1,100 faculty and staff, as well as over 10,000 students

Key Responsibilities

Leadership of Engineering IT Shared Services

  • Lead and manage Engineering IT Shared Services, a team of 75+ professional IT staff.
  • Align resources with strategic goals by overseeing staffing, budgeting, and service delivery.
  • Supervise recruitment, development, and retention of staff; mentor and coach managers.
  • Set strategic direction and lead multi-year initiatives across the organization.
  • Oversee project prioritization, charters, budgets, and timelines.
  • Prepare reports, recommendations, and strategic plans for college and campus leadership.
  • Evaluate proposals, review procedures, and establish official policies.
  • Define hiring and funding priorities for IT across the College.
  • Set training and professional development goals for the organization.
  • Manage facilities use, space planning, and related investments.
  • Maintain HR, budget, and facilities documentation, including hiring plans and funding structures.
  • Track organizational performance metrics and communicate results to stakeholders.

IT Strategy for the Grainger College of Engineering

  • Lead the development and implementation of the College’s IT services strategy.
  • Collaborate with governance committees, administrative leaders, and IT leadership to align services with college goals.
  • Identify and address mid- to long-term risks and opportunities.
  • Advise college leadership and contribute to strategic initiatives and committees.
  • Define key challenges and guide the organization in developing and executing solutions.

Campus Engagement and Representation

  • Represent the College on campus-wide IT matters, including participation in the IT Council and governance committees.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with IT leaders across campus and beyond.
  • Serve as both a leader and contributor in representing Engineering at Illinois in external forums.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualification & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s Degree will be considered one (1) year of experience.
  • Twelve (12) years professional experience in IT operations which must include (years’ experience may run concurrently):
    • Eight (8) years’ experience supervising staff
    • Six (6) years’ experience with the responsibilities of large, diverse academic IT organizations
    • Six (6) years’ experience working with customers
    • Three (3) years’ experience with developing and managing budgets
    • Three (3) years’ experience in a higher education environment
  • Experience supervising subordinate managers
  • Experience participating in diverse workgroups

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience with customer relationship management in a professional capacity
  • Advanced business analysis, project management, and/or planning skills or certification
