Description
The Director, Strategic R&D Project & Portfolio Operations, Orthopedics plays a critical strategic and operational role in ensuring the effective execution of our research & development strategy. This leader will be responsible for managing the execution of the Orthopedics R&D project portfolio to enable delivery of annual multi-platform commitments to specific revenue, profitability, and innovation milestone goals identified in partnership with leadership. This leader will own the annual processes for Orthopedics R&D Portfolio baselining & alignment, portfolio change management, key performance indicator (KPI) reporting, risk escalation, and integrated cross-functional resource planning, and they will work directly with the platform Project Management Office, Finance, R&D, Data Analytics, and Global Strategic Marketing teams to help execute strategic process improvements planned in partnership with Senior Leadership. This leader will own the R&D Orthopedics department Project Portfolio dashboard, delivering valuable, real-time insights to leadership into how R&D is progressing towards their annual launches, milestones, and revenue objectives. They will also champion the Orthopedics Project Management Community of Practice and efforts to improve Project Management excellence and integration throughout the organization. Key Responsibilities
- Orthopedics R&D Portfolio Execution & Reporting: You will work closely with the Ortho PMO Leadership Team and all multi-functional partners supporting product development to ensure alignment, accountability, and focus for effective execution of critical R&D programs. The primary objective for this leader is supporting critical New Product Development (NPD) projects to successfully achieve time, budget, and financial expectations. Other objectives include management of the Orthopedics KPI-agreements, alignment of project resource allocations, management of shared service priorities, and partnering with other NPD departments (i.e. supply chain, quality, regulatory) to proactively identify challenges and mitigate them. You will be responsible for effective governance of any Ortho-level project performance operating mechanisms such as Dashboard Reviews or Platform Risk escalation reviews.
- Project Management Process Improvements: This role will have the opportunity to streamline how we launch products by influencing the way we conduct resource management, project KPI management, portfolio change management, and project status tracking processes. This includes collaborating with all functions to maintain the R&D data analytics that will be used to drive effective decision-making. You may also have additional responsibilities related to operational strategies that will improve end-to-end NPD execution. This could include identifying areas of opportunity and recommending enhancements to be implemented into project plans and/or time-to-market initiatives. This goal also includes being a champion for new enterprise tools or platform process improvements, as well as helping to evolve the organizational culture to be aligned with our Credo, strategic plans, and long-term vision.
- Resource Planning & Allocation: Another critical aspect of this role is to lead the implementation of the Long- Range Innovation Planning process by coordinating with PMO leadership, Orthopedics Finance, and Data Analytics to obtain high-fidelity project-level data and provide input to the process of strategic portfolio evaluation. You will help coordinate with Platform PMO, R&D, Data Analytics teams, and Global Strategic Marketing Directors to ensure that all platform project data and financial metrics are consistent, accurate, cross-functionally aligned, and able to be used effectively to drive portfolio-level evaluation and scenario assessments for business planning purposes.
- Project Management: Analyze cross-platform opportunities for continuous improvement of our PMO excellence, culture, and execution results to enhance productivity and efficiency. Oversee key strategic change initiatives for the PMO to implement best practices across platforms, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with organizational goals. Act as a liaison between various stakeholders to coordinate efforts and learn lessons.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as key partner and communicator between the R&D PMOs and senior leadership, ensuring critical information is delivered effectively to advance the overall vision, and decisions / actions are clear and aligned across platforms. Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, collaborating with other functions to support R&D goals.
Qualification & Requirements
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Science or related field is required.
- 15+ years of experience within one of the following areas: Research & Development leadership, project management, healthcare technical environment and/or driving strategic planning and relationships is required.
- Regulated industry experience is required. Medical device or pharmaceutical industry experience is preferred.
- Strong technical expertise and business acumen within strategic planning and execution.
- Proven success in partnering and influencing across a matrix environment.
- Proven effective change management and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated comfort with ambiguity.
- The ability to actively develop talent and culture to achieve results.
- 10% Domestic and International travel required.
