Description

The Director, Shared Financial Services is responsible for leading the Shared Financial Services Team (SFS) and maintaining overall integrity, accountability, and viability of the group. SFS provides shared financial and accounting services to Make-A-Wish chapters who elect to utilize such services offered by the National Office. They provide oversight and guidance in areas related to accounting, internal and external reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and financial management.

Remote positions are open to applicants based anywhere in the continental U.S. Hybrid positions are open to applicants based in the Phoenix, Arizona area.

Director, Shared Financial Services

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishes and drives the vision, strategies, goals, and objectives of the Shared Financial Services team.
  • Establishes the optimal organizational design, processes, and procedures to achieve Shared Financial Services’ objectives.
  • Partners with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure ERP and CRM system integrations and enhancements are successful.
  • Identifies opportunities for productivity improvements, cost savings, and revenue enhancement initiatives that support the organization’s strategic and financial goals.
  • Recruits, trains, and leads team of 25+ accounting professionals, including training them on current accounting principles and organizational policies.
  • Creates an environment that promotes a high performing team atmosphere with motivation to learn and grow.
  • Directs, motivates, and coaches staff and supports them in partnering with participating chapters.
  • Directs and monitors internal and management control systems within Shared Financial Services and in participating chapters.
  • Develops and documents business processes as well as policies and procedures to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Owns the reporting process for participating chapters’ monthly and annual financial statements, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and compliance with organizational policies and U.S. GAAP.
  • Leads efforts to provide strong analytics and financial analysis to participating chapters.
  • Coordinates and manages completion of the external audit process for participating chapters.
  • Researches technical, financial, and accounting issues.
  • Directs the preparation of participating chapter’s 990 forms as well as applicable state tax filings.
  • Directs planning and forecasting projects for participating chapters.
  • Serves an active role as a business leader in the Finance organization and supports the overall objectives of the business.
  • Collaborates with Finance department leaders and other business partners on opportunities to improve established processes and procedures and provide effective and efficient tools to ensure business requirements and needs are met.
  • Serves as an advisor to participating chapters on complex accounting matters.
  • Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.

Qualification & Requirements

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Excellent knowledge of accounting, internal control systems and information systems applications in a nonprofit environment.
  • Familiarity with processes and procedures for both audit planning and forensic accounting.
  • Demonstrated ability as an influencer to gain trust and convince others of a compelling value proposition.
  • Demonstrated experience drafting and reviewing internal and external financial statements.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage projects from inception to completion.
  • Familiarity with relevant changes in tax and accounting regulations.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate exceptional leadership skills that inspire and motivate others to succeed.
  • Engage effectively with professionals at all levels of the organization.
  • Organize work, prioritize, and delegate to meet deadlines, and make timely decisions with sound judgment.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with a high level of trust and confidentiality and possess strong business ethics.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, and CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years in the accounting and/or finance field.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a management or leadership role required.
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit organizations is required.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, NetSuite, and Salesforce applications required.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to thrive in a remote environment.
  • Some travel required.
  • May require work outside a traditional Monday – Friday work week, and outside normal business hours.
