To join our JV Excellence and Asset Development team at Martinez, CA. This role is part of the JV Excellence and Asset Development team and reports to the President of Martinez Renewables and the Neste US President. Neste’s regional headquarters in North America is based in Houston, Texas. Neste and affiliated entities, including Mahoney Environmental Services, Agri Trading, and SeQuential Environmental Services, employ more than 900 people across the US.
You will focus on managing and optimizing the strategic long-term development of the Martinez refining facility. In this role, you will work closely with the JV Leadership Team, JV Board, Refinery Leadership Team, Marathon Petroleum, and Neste stakeholders. Martinez Renewables is a Joint Venture between Marathon Petroleum (USA), the largest refining company in the US, and Neste Oyj (Finland), one of the world’s leading renewables companies.
We produce renewable fuels, including renewable diesel and propane, using organic fats, oils, greases, wastes, and residues as input feedstocks. You will be a Neste team member, seconded to the Joint Venture’s small, dynamic, and high-performance team at the Joint Venture office at the Martinez facility
Key Responsibilities
In our team, you will
- Lead the Asset Development team and serve as a member of the JV’s Leadership Team.
- Oversee and review the performance of the Operator through agreed KPIs, ensuring all targets are achieved and continuous improvements are delivered.
- Manage the JV’s strategic portfolio, identifying, leading, and executing key development initiatives and capital projects that enhance operational efficiency and maximize asset value.
- Work collaboratively with the Facility General Manager, refinery leadership, and parent company interface teams to coordinate operational strategies and support project execution.
- Act as the owner of the JV’s continuous improvement process and Refining Shared Services, ensuring services delivered by Marathon Petroleum are aligned with JV objectives and meet performance and cost expectations.
- Provide oversight, coaching, and leadership for joint venture asset development activities and long-term planning strategies.
- Coordinate technical support from both Marathon Petroleum and Neste, ensuring optimal use of expertise and resources in collaboration with site Technical Services personnel.
- Serve as the focal point for JV long-term planning and strategy, ensuring alignment with the direction set by the JV Leadership Team and JV Board.
- Research and identify intellectual property barriers to facilitate effective knowledge sharing and information flow with the Refinery GM organization.
You will be responsible for managing and optimizing the strategic long-term development of the Martinez refining facility. This includes overseeing the Operator’s performance through agreed KPIs; ensuring that costs are aligned with benchmark levels; owning the JV’s continuous improvement process; and ensuring that site development initiatives are aligned with the JV’s strategic plan.
- Oversee the development and management of the refinery’s strategic initiatives to safely increase performance, productivity, and profitability
- Conduct managerial assessments of refinery and logistics performance to ensure operations meet productivity and cost benchmarks, and implement improvements where applicable
- Oversee the performance of the Operator of the facility through agreed KPIs, ensuring all targets are achieved and aligned with the JV’s strategic plan
- Lead the JV’s continuous improvement process and serve as the owner of Refining Shared Services (services delivered by Marathon Petroleum in support of refining operations)
- Manage the JV’s strategic portfolio by identifying, leading, and executing capital projects and initiatives that enhance long-term asset value
- Collaborate with the Facility General Manager and refinery leadership to coordinate operational strategies and support seamless execution of major projects
- Serve as an ex-officio member of the Refinery Leadership Team (RLT) to align day-to-day operations with the JV’s long-term strategy
- Provide oversight, coaching, and leadership for joint venture asset development activities, ensuring the successful implementation of long-term planning strategies
- Coordinate technical support from both Marathon Petroleum and Neste to ensure effective resource utilization and collaboration with site Technical Services personnel
- Research and identify intellectual property barriers to enable the effective transfer of knowledge and information to and from the Refinery GM organization
- Build and maintain strong relationships with various groups within Marathon Petroleum and Neste to support alignment across the joint venture and parent organizations
Qualification & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Finance, Accounting, Engineering, or Environmental Science
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in relevant roles, including Technical Services, Economics & Planning, Environment, Supply Chain, and/or Refining Operations
- Deep understanding of refinery operations and logistics
- Proven experience collaborating with leadership teams and JV Boards, including presenting to Boards and participating in executive decision-making processes
- Strong project and portfolio management skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead without direct managerial authority in a complex, matrixed joint venture environment
- Strong communication skills across multiple organizational levels
- Positive, solution-oriented mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving
- Willingness to develop JV processes and business models, with a hands-on attitude
