Description
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Director, Backend Engineering to join our Digital Technology department. We are seeking an experienced, dynamic, and strategic individual to lead and oversee the backend engineering teams responsible for powering a high-traffic e-commerce platform. This critical role will focus on building and maintaining a robust, scalable backend infrastructure that seamlessly integrates with our Order Management System (OMS), Catalog and Product Information Management (PIM), Data Lake, Marketing Technology (MarTech) stack, and various third-party integrations, including payment systems. You will be responsible for driving technical innovation, ensuring high availability, scalability, and security, and collaborating cross-functionally to align engineering efforts with business goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the design, implementation, and evolution of the backend architecture to ensure it supports high availability, fault tolerance, performance, and scalability.
- Lead, mentor, and grow a talented team of backend engineers and integration specialists. Foster a collaborative, innovative, and high-performance engineering culture focused on operational excellence.
- Establish the processes needed to achieve high throughput product development and system reliability while enabling rapid experimentation and data-informed decisions.
- Continuously optimize backend systems to improve system performance, reduce latency, and handle high volumes of traffic during peak seasons.
- Lead root cause analysis for backend issues and integrations, driving fast resolution and implementing long-term improvements to prevent future occurrences.
- Establish and maintain coding standards, code review processes, and testing practices.
- Foster collaborative environment where best product and technical ideas are nurtured and come to life.
- Manage the delivery of high-impact e-commerce applications.
- Actively participate in the recruitment process to attract and retain top talent.
Qualification & Requirements
What You’ll Bring | Skills & Experience
- 12+ years of experience building digital customer experiences for e-commerce and SaaS applications.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related experience.
- Proven experience working with high-traffic e-commerce platforms and handling large-scale, mission-critical systems.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices, and cloud-native architectures.
- Experience scaling and managing 20+ person teams, building strong bench of senior individual contributors.
- Experience initiating and driving strategic initiatives and leading engineering teams.
- Track record of successful cross-functional collaboration while building engaging e-commerce solutions in B2C settings.
- Proven track record of designing and delivering large-scale distributed systems and software products in high volume consumer facing applications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.

- Previous experience working inside innovative, high-growth environments.
- Experience leading initiatives and developing thought leadership in high visibility domains.
- Experience with influencing open-source community or industry groups.
- Experience with leveraging AI technology to streamline engineering activities.
