Description

The IT Application Development Manager will oversee a team dedicated to applications utilized by United’s Technical Operations aircraft maintenance and engineering business unit. United’s Technical Operations team is one of the world’s largest Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) organizations. Our team continually innovates to deliver digital solutions to support this complex, dynamic operation.

This is a hands-on technical manager role, responsible for leading a team that delivers web and mobile applications. As a manager, you will lead a team of developers, analysts, and other roles to deliver reliably and successfully within an agile team. You will coach, mentor, and develop others to achieve their best performance. You will be the face of our products with internal customers. A strong application development background with a broad, full-stack skillset will be an asset in this role.

Manager – IT Applications Development

Key Responsibilities

Product Delivery and Support:

  • Responsible for delivery of large programs and continuous improvement initiatives within the web and backend channels.
  • Collaborate with developers, cross-functional digital technology teams, and business users to design, develop, and integrate user interfaces and services that meet business needs.
  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing project tasks on schedule and by interacting with and mentoring team members.
  • Collaborate with network, security, end-user services, common services, and other IT stakeholders to ensure adherence to standards, IT security, enterprise architecture, and integration considerations.
  • Provide effective leadership, motivation, and mentoring to develop team members on managing 3rd party vendor-hosted solutions, various phases of the software development life cycle, oversight of resources located locally and remotely, and adherence to United Airlines standards for security, platform, and performance.
  • Guide team on facilitating the investigation of production outages/problems and the subsequent restoration of service; ensure the determination of root cause with plans for remediation; escalation points for application/system production outages.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of technologies and architectures used to support assigned set of applications and systems.
  • Ensure IT application development process disciplines (solution delivery, project management, work requests, QA, etc.) and standards are established, effectively managed and performed.

Leadership

  • Build and maintain relationships with business partners by providing a team of subject matter experts and leadership to collaborate with a matrixed team of functional and technical resources across the organization to deliver value-added services and solutions.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the team and IT support groups to ensure business and technical requirements are met, and the finished product is delivered to the customer per schedule and budget.
  • Reports to senior leadership on key performance indicators for departmental initiatives and on the health of the projects under their supervision.
  • Lead team members and collaborate with business units to execute an application roadmap.
  • Influence and motivate members of their peer group to better managerial and leadership practices.
  • Conduct performance reviews, coaching, and identifying training and development requirements and plans.
  • Demonstrate business skills with the ability to effectively negotiate priorities across multiple groups/teams.
  • Accountable for administrative management of 10+ IT professionals as direct reports – HR administration, Time Reporting, etc.

This position is offered on local terms and conditions. Expatriate assignments and sponsorship for employment visas, even on a time-limited visa status, will not be awarded. This position is for United Airlines Business Services Pvt. Ltd – a wholly owned subsidiary of United Airlines Inc.

Qualification & Requirements

What’s needed to succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or other related field and at least 8 years of equivalent work experience required.
  • 5 years of technical lead/management experience in an application development setting.
  • 3+ years of hands-on software development experience with front-end and .NET technologies in enterprise systems with high availability and performance requirements.
  • Technical and business knowledge in software development life cycle, quality assurance, project management, and other related disciplines/processes.
  • 12 months experience in Agile development.
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification.
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in India for any employer without sponsorship. Must be fluent in English (written and spoken).

  • MS in Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Systems, or another related field.
  • Airline Experience is a plus.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of machinery, equipment, and systems, including their components and functions. Specialized knowledge applicable to the aviation Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) industry, with expertise in aircraft engines, avionics, and airframe structures.
  • Understanding manufacturing execution systems (MES) will be beneficial.
