Description

The General Manager (GM) of Ameritrack Rail is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all facets and shared services for Ameritrack Rail. GM formulates and enforces policies, plans the use of material and deployment of labor. GM will initiate, prioritize, and execute sales activities to achieve agreed upon business unit goals. GM is accountable for projecting and controlling costs by collecting and analyzing information regarding operation’s projects. This position requires a person who is both strategic and extremely hands-on operationally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Select and develop leadership to empower direct reports to establish a productive work environment that encourages a team approach for continuous improvement and for achieving the Company’s objectives.
  • Promote and manage safety and regulatory compliance through random audits alongside and in collaboration with Health and Safety resources.
  • Ensure all employees are fully trained and committed to working safely through ongoing safety briefings and documentation.
  • Utilize the 80/20 principles to maximize profit.
  • Achieve staffing objectives by working with Human Resources to recruit and evaluate job candidates, and hire employees in compliance with local, state and federal laws and requirements.
  • Evaluate prospective offers to bid upon by costing changes, additions, and project requirements.
  • Develop proposals with internal team members to maintain and increase the value of current customer base and secure new business.
  • Obtain bids from vendors and subcontractors by specifying materials; identify qualified subcontractors; and negotiate price.
  • Manage projects, pricing, and margins to agreed goals.
  • Collaborate with Operations to ensure that service meets customer requirements. Resolve all customer service issues and cost discrepancies.
  • Prepare budgets by studying projects, updating specifications, and identifying and projecting costs for each elevation.
  • Prepare special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Maintain a high level of quality service by following organization standards.
  • Ensure that a preventive maintenance schedule is established and followed on all company equipment.
  • Various projects and duties as assigned.

Qualification & Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Build and develop positive working relationships with staff, customers and vendors.
  • Effective and positive leadership and people-management skills are crucial; knowledge of procedures for recruiting and hiring, training, pay and benefits, employee relations, and a basic understanding of employment law.
  • Proficient with computer software to conduct daily business activities (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc).
  • Superior communication skills: Must be comfortable engaging in a variety of different communicative modes (verbal and written) and being attuned to others through strong active listening skills.
  • Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Strong teamwork, initiative, resilience, and tact required.
  • This leadership role may require regularly engaging with the Labor workforce in various weather conditions wearing a hardhat and steel toe boots.
  • Must be comfortable making decisions with a strong focus on Safety and Quality.
  • Ability to understand and communicate within a technical or specialized subject- matter, particular as it pertains to the industry.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and 10+ years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7-10 years’ experience in transportation and/or construction project management, including experience analyzing project costs and information, setting project budgets, and estimating costs preferred.
  • 5+ years management/supervisory experience.
