Explore Edmonton Corporation (EEC) is looking for an Executive Director of Communications and Connections who will oversee the Communications and Connections team, driving compelling brand storytelling and collaborative stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Executive Director serves as the trusted, senior strategic communications advisor to the CEO and Executive Leadership Team. This position is focused on the short-, medium- and long-term leadership of the Communications and Connections team, with a mission to advance the corporation’s relationships and reputation. The Executive Director guides the organization in projecting its brand, mission, and values among all stakeholder groups, including employees, industry partners, business and community partners, government and the public.
  • Interacting continually with the CEO and senior leaders across the organization, the Executive Director enables the organization at all levels, including the board of directors, to effectively convey the organization’s value and build support for its initiatives. The position has strong cross-functional ties with all three lines of business: destination marketing and development, management of Edmonton Convention Centre and Edmonton EXPO Centre, and production of owned events.
  • Reporting to the Vice-President, Shared Services, the Executive Director of Communications and Connections, works directly with the CEO and senior leadership team to develop and execute Explore Edmonton’s communications and stakeholder engagement strategy. The Executive Director collaborates closely and proactively with a wide range of EEC colleagues to ensure that program communications needs are being met across all departments and functions.
  • This position will help shape a highly driven team of communications and stakeholder professionals, fostering a collaborative, co-ordinated and customer-focused approach to delivering strategic, on-brand, high-quality communications.

Qualification & Requirements

  • Undergraduate or Master’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or related field with 10+ years of related experience
  • Advanced strategic communications planning skills; excellent relationship-building and negotiating skills, able to operate within a three-to-five-year planning environment
  • Excellent executive-level, shareholder and stakeholder communications skills in a variety of long-term and issues-driven circumstances
  • Highly developed skills in leading change, collaboration, problem-solving, risk mitigation and critical thinking, with a commitment to continuous learning on principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail
  • Exceptional people management skills with a track record of encouraging and mentoring successful communications teams
  • Well-honed media interview and coaching skills, with a deep understanding of news and industry media needs
  • Ability to conduct research and present data and analysis in a succinct and clear manner
  • Ability to work well as a team player as well as independently with confidentiality
  • Strong understanding of professional discretion
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness and critical thinking in a variety of situations
  • Excellent writing, editing, grammatical, organizational and research skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a broad range of people, including employees, executives, board members and a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Excellent management, time-management and problem-solving skills
  • Superb presentation communications skills, with proven ability to present to large audiences and during high-stakes situations
  • Strong working knowledge of Canadian Press style
  • Ability to anticipate, assess and readily adapt to changing priorities; maintain resilience in times of uncertainty and effectively work in a changing environment
  • Proficient in Office 365; Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Visio, with intermediate knowledge of CRM programs.
